Therapeutic Honeys

Bees and Honey

As we described in our post on Pooh Wisdom, pure organic honeys have powerful healing qualities and were widely used to fight infection until the advent of penicillin in the early twentieth century when their use receded into the background.

More recently, the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. have revealed that most of the dangerous bacterial strains found across the world are becoming resistant to the most commonly prescribed antibiotics (reported in the Washington Post, August 7, 2007). It is not therefore surprising that given increasing recognition of honey’s antibacterial qualities, it is making a comeback.

However, not all honeys are created equal, at least therapeutically. Their healing powers depend on a number of factors:

  • Where and how they are produced;
  • The quality of nutrition and care provided to the bees;
  • And the presence of additives and contaminants.

Most of the commonly available honeys in the U.S. and elsewhere are processed and refined. Many of these are colored and sweetened with sugar and lack the therapeutic properties of naturally occurring enzymes as well as the antibacterial and antimicrobial characteristics possessed by naturally derived raw honey.

One brand of therapeutic honey that has particularly impressed us is LifeMel Honey, a truly unique honey produced by Zuf Globus Laboratories Ltd. in Israel and distributed by LifeMel USA.

The result of thirty years of research, LifeMel Honey has been specially developed to provide support for patients undergoing chemotherapy, and those, more generally, whose immune systems have been compromised.  It combines the recognized benefits of pure honey in combination with special medicinal herbs and other natural, immune system-boosting and health-enhancing ingredients.

So what makes this honey unique?

The answer to this question lies in its method of production.  In place of pollen, bees are fed on specially prepared nectar derived from natural honey to which the extracts of selected therapeutic herbs in combination with other nutritional supplements, including iron, protein, and vitamins, are added.

This feeding method allows for the control of precise doses of desired food types provided to the bees, which ultimately produce an entirely new variety of honey with predesigned properties that are further improved through its synergetic formation in the bees’ bodies.

The 100 percent purity of this honey is ensured through its production in a controlled environment which guarantees a pollution-free pollination process. Apart from being collected and packaged, it is not artificially treated in any way. Nor are any ingredients added after the honey is extracted from the hive.

LifeMel Honey is available in two forms:

LifeMel Chemo Support 1. LifeMel Chemo Support Honey

This honey supports the treatment of the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation suffered by cancer patients and can significantly improve the quality of their lives. It is the only honey available that has been clinically demonstrated to decrease the side effects of chemotherapy, including anemia, severe neutropenia (abnormally low numbers of neutrophils), and thrombocytopenia (low platelets), experienced by patients. No adverse effects were associated with this honey (Medical Oncology, Vol. 23, No. 4, 549-552, 2006)

A leading British oncologist, Professor Karol, expressing his opinion about LifeMel honey, was quoted in the Daily Mail (28 July, 2007) as saying that “it’s plausible that there are natural factors that stimulate bone marrow cells” though he felt that more research was needed. The same article describes how Dr. Heime Geffen, a Canadian doctor who was suffering from acute myelocytic leukemia, made a remarkable recovery after taking LifeMel. In his words: “”It’s not proven but it’s made from natural ingredients and there are no side effects. It is worth a try if you are at a dead end, as I was. My life has turned around.”

LifeMel Chemo Support has the therapeutic effects of a number of well known medicinal herbs and nutritional supplements fed to the bees that produce it. A partial list of these herbs includes: Siberian Ginseng, Elecampane, Dandelion, Blackcurrant, Fig, Lemon Balm, Bilberry, Pot Marigold, Red Clover, Stinging Nettle, White Mulberry, Oats, Chicory, Echinacea, Spinach Beet and Uncaria Tomen.

LifeMel Immune Support 2. LifeMel Immune Support Honey

Life Mel Immune Support Honey is a natural solution that helps to strengthen a weakened immune system, regardless of the cause of this weakness. It was, in fact, developed to work specifically on the immune system and can be used by those who have completed chemotherapy treatments and want to continue with an immune support regime. It can also be used by those who want to strengthen their immune systems more generally and improve its functionality. This all natural product:

  • Assists the body in recuperation and convalescence.
  • Supports the natural ability of the immune system to fight fatigue and maintain energy levels.
  • Is a natural immune system booster.

A partial list of medicinal herbs contained in the feed provided to the bees that produce this honey includes: Alfalfa, Elderberry, Echinacea, Knotgrass, Siberian Ginseng, Spinach Beet, and Uncaria Tomen.

Both of these remarkable products are classified as ISO certified (Israeli Standard Institute); H.A.C.C.P (Israeli Standard Institute); and G.M.P. (Israeli Health Ministry). They have no side effects and can be used in conjunction with other medication without time restrictions. However, people sensitive to apiary products (bees and bee products) should avoid their use.

UPDATE: LifeMel Honey has recently launched two new products which are excellent winter remedies against respiratory infections and coughs:

1. BronchoMel: studies have found that this product is effective in treating recurring infections in the upper respiratory system, pneumonia, and sore throats in children, significantly reducing the need for medical treatment (Dr. Mirim Vadim, 2008).

2. LaryngoMel: has natural antibiotic properties and is useful for treating problems in the upper respiratory tract, pharynx, and larynx.

In our article Pooh Wisdom, we described some of therapeutic properties and health benefits of honey and specifically Manuka honey, which is made from the nectar of the New Zealand Manuka tree, also known as the Tea Tree.

New Zealand’s Active Manuka honey UMF is one of the world’s most sought after therapeutic honeys. The benefits of Manuka honey are well known and it has been recommended for medical purposes because of its special anti-infection and natural anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to possessing, like other honeys, naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide which is an effective agent against bacteria, some but not all varieties of Manuka possess a special antibacterial quality known as the “Unique Manuka Factor” (UMF) not found in any other honey.

The UMF is a measure of the antibacterial strength of a Manuka honey, with higher UMF numbers indicating greater strength and more powerful medicinal properties. Active Manuka honey with a high UMF (15+ and above) has powerful anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that are essential for safeguarding health.

Even at a dilution level of more than 100-fold, this honey can still halt the growth of bacteria, including highly resistant forms such as the H bug staphylococcus aureus and helicobacter pylori (most stomach ulcers are caused by this). It has been shown in clinical studies to heal seriously infected wounds, bacterial infections, leg ulcers and abscesses.

Manuka honey UMF has a great many uses and can be topically applied for a variety of conditions such as scratches, spots, scalds, insect bites, bed sores, and even athlete’s foot. It is an excellent wound healer and can speed up healing and reduce scarring.

Manuka honey UMF is widely used as a natural treatment for all kinds of burns – first, second, and third degree burns as well as chemical burns. Its topical use is considered to be safe for use by diabetics for treating and healing diabetic ulcers and wounds, as well as for any other skin ulcers. However, it is always wise for diabetics to closely monitor their blood sugar levels.

Apart from using this wonderful honey externally, it can also be enjoyed on toast or in a warm drink, and can help to improve general health and well-being. It can be taken internally for stomach upsets and sore throats.

Importantly, Manuka Honey Products are very safe. If you are not allergic to bee products and can eat honey, you should not experience any side effects from Manuka honey. However, you should consult your doctor if you have any concerns, and if you are diabetic.
